Carlos:
Hi, Carlos Sanchez
here on “Don’t Miss It,” were we show you the bright spots in TV, movies, and
music. Listen up and find out what
you don’t want to miss.
(7 second sound clip of witty
dialogue from Community.)
Carlos:
That’s from NBC’s Community. This sitcom follows a quirky study group at Greendale
Community College. It has a
particularly colorful cast of characters and it’s a refreshing take on the
situation comedy.
Almost every
sitcom on the air has one of two things: laughing tracks or mockumentary camera
style. Laughing tracks are of
course an old staple of sitcom TV, but for those of us who don’t like being
told when to laugh, Community is
pleasantly free of this canned chuckling.
What’s new about that? Nothing—NBC’s The
Office and Parks & Recreation
is laughing-track free as well. In
fact, laughing tracks might just be on their way to the grave—well can hope,
can’t we?
Community is shot
differently than The Office and other
sitcoms like it. The Office is famous for its
“documentary footage” style. But
when you have The Office, Parks and Rec, and even ABC’s Modern Family doing that style, you
kinda start wanting something else. And that’s why we have Community. It has subtle and unobtrusive camera
work that puts the focus on the characters and the brilliantly written dialogue
that’s crammed full of witty pop-culture references.

So if you haven’t
seen it, check it out. Next time we’ll be taking a look at two movies about to
hit the box office that you don’t want to miss. That’s all for today.
